The Great American Read was an eight-part series with viewer participation to select Americas favorite novel, told through the prism of. Here also is a city that is culturally shifting, where Islam is taking a more prominent role in people’s everyday and political lives and in the geography of the city.Ī penetrating evocation of memory, pain, and place that is lightened by everyday joys such as delightful accounts of shared meals and gardening, Going Home is perhaps Raja Shehadeh’s most moving and painfully visceral addition to his series of personal histories of the occupation, confirming Rachel Kushner’s judgment that “Shehadeh is a buoy in a sea of bleakness. Michael Corleone is in exile in Sicily due to the events covered in The Godfather. Here is a city whose green spaces-gardens and hills crowned with olive trees-have been replaced by tower blocks and concrete lots where the Israeli occupation has further entrenched itself in every aspect of movement, from the roads that can and cannot be used to the bureaucratic barriers that prevent people leaving the West Bank. Set in a single day-the day that happens to be the fiftieth anniversary of Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and Gaza-the book is a powerful and moving record and chronicle of the changing face of his city. In Going Home, Raja Shehadeh, the Orwell Prize–winning author of Palestinian Walks, takes us on a series of journeys around his hometown of Ramallah.

Yet even if Lovecraft didn’t have the same vocabulary to describe LGBTQ+ folks that people do today, they still existed. Lovecraft, for example, never used the term “transgender” because it hadn’t been coined until several decades after his death, and when he used the term “queer” he meant odd, strange, or weird. LGBTQ+ folks have existed throughout history, though changing gender and sexual norms, and shifting understanding of human biology, psychology, and sexuality, have changed how LGBTQ+ folks were historically understand and identified. And all the queer things were fixed very strongly in his mind. 5/11/2023 0 Comments At Swim-Two-Birds by Flann O'BrienIt's his death that precipitates the nervous breakdown that costs Tom his job, and Savannah, almost, her life. There are enough traumas here to fall an average-sized mental ward, but the biggie centers around Luke, who uses the skills learned as a Navy SEAL in Vietnam to fight a guerrilla war against the installation of a nuclear power plant in Colleton and is killed by the authorities. Susan (a shrink with a lot of time on her hands) says to Tom, "Will you stay in New York and tell me all you know?" and he does, for nearly 600 mostly-bloated pages of flashbacks depicting The Family Wingo of swampy Colleton County: a beautiful mother, a brutal shrimper father (the Great Santini alive and kicking), and Tom and Savannah's much-admired older brother, Luke. Savannah, it turns out, is catatonic, and before the suicide attempt had completely assumed the identity of a dead friend-the implication being that she couldn't stand being a Wingo anymore. When he hears that his fierce, beautiful twin sister Savannah, a well-known New York poet, has once again attempted suicide, he escapes his present emasculation by flying north to meet Savannah's comely psychiatrist, Susan Lowenstein. Tom Wingo is an unemployed South Carolinian football coach whose internist wife is having an affair with a pompous cardiac man. A flabby, fervid melodrama of a high-strung Southern family from Conroy ( The Great Santini, The Lords of Discipline), whose penchant for overwriting once again obscures a genuine talent. 5/10/2023 0 Comments Film art bordwellFilm Art is generously illustrated with more than 1,000 frame enlargements taken directly from completed films, providing concrete illustrations of key concepts. A few, like David, try to take any sort of action. Others completely shut down, nearly going catatonic. A few take immediately to alcohol by raiding the store’s supply of beer. The numerous patrons of the grocery store respond to this crisis in a few different ways. They are trapped in the store by a mysterious mist that contains multitudes of deadly monsters. The father, David, and his son Billy leave the mother behind as they journey with their arrogant neighbor to the local market to pick up some supplies. The concept is simple, a family’s lake house is destroyed by a storm. It contains some of the usual King characters and it’s important to remember that these weren’t cliches before King invented them. It’s a quick read that is highly entertaining the whole time. The Mist is a much shorter novel of his and has been adapted into a film like nearly every one of his books. I suppose there is a reason he’s so popular. Since then, I’ve quite enjoyed the few that I’ve read and will continue to read more. At the insistence of, well everyone, I picked up a random book of his and gave it another try. I decided then that I didn’t care much for King and didn’t try again for a very long time. When I was way too young to appreciate it I attempted to read The Shining. I’ve been slowly attempting to see what Stephen King is all about. 5/10/2023 0 Comments Apocalipsis Z by Manel LoureiroIt starts off with a summary of how the world has succumbed to the zombie apocalypse in a way that could allow you to start the series here instead of with Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End. My main problem with this, and the reason for 3 stars instead of 4, is that the conflicts didn’t peak high enough and the ending fell flat. Add to this The Walking Dead’s season finale leaving a void in my zombie adventures and this story was ripe to be enjoyed.ĭark Days (Apocalypse Z) by Manel Loureiro is a tough one to rate because the start to finish experience was better than the first book, Apocalypse Z, in terms of character development, pacing and the narrator got even better with the larger cast of voices. It turns out my fandom is not alone, Nick has won multiple Earphones Award, Best Voices of the Year awards. Blame the narrator, Nick Podehl, whose gift for giving voice to suspense could keep me glued to the Golf Channel. 5/10/2023 0 Comments Spud learning to fly bookSivan and Lee are joined by rising young acting stars Sven Ruygrok (Rambo) and Alex McGregor (Christine), UCT business science student Thomas Burne (Vern), cricket star and part-time model Byron Langley (Simon), Johannesburg's Travis Hornsby (Boggo), Durban's Blessing Xaba (Fatty) and second-year varsity student Genna Blair (The Mermaid). World famous South African YouTuber Caspar Lee makes his screen debut in the role of garrulous Garlic from Malawi. Billboard just ranked Troye alongside Justin Bieber and Lorde in their list of Music’s Hottest 21 Stars under the age of 21. With his number one hit song Happy Little Pill and debut EP ‘Tryxye’, Troye not only has big screen stardom pegged but pop super stardom too. A household name, he currently has over 2.7 million subscribers to his YouTube channel and just under two million twitter followers. Sivan hails from South Africa and has starred as Spud in all three motion pictures. Based on the best-selling novel by Durban-born novelist, actor, playwright and producer John van de Ruit and directed by John Barker, the movie sees most of the original cast return, headed up by film and television legend John Cleese. Not only was it shot in the heart of Cape Town but it also boasts the biggest collection of local and international stars. The trouble was that every time Ram Dass began to sink back into the nose yoga he’d get another high-voltage jolt in the jaw and instantly the same home movies would start up again on the back of his eyelids. On the instructor’s advice he tried thinking the pain away, mentally swishing it around his jaw and out his mouth like a swill of water, and when that didn’t work he tried ignoring it. And yet the toothache had felt real enough, building until the nerve seemed a snaking electric wire, making it all but impossible for him to fix his attention on the tip of his nose and watch his breath go in and out, in and out, in and out, which was pretty much all he was supposed to do from four in the morning until ten at night during the meditation retreat. Richard Alpert, Ph.D., would know all about mind games by now. YOU’D THINK THAT BABA Ram Dass, who had been a Harvard psychology professor and psychedelic drug researcher in his former incarnation as Dr. This story was originally published in the April 22nd, 1976, issue of “Rolling Stone.” 5/10/2023 0 Comments Dragons of God by Vincent CoppolaThe short version: so unwieldy and expensive was the production and so exhausting were the battles over final cut that by the time it flopped in theaters (earning only a little over $3 million off a $44 million budget) that not only did it greatly contribute to the collapse of its studio, United Artists, Heaven’s Gate is largely blamed for ushering out the auteur-driven ethos of its era, known as New Hollywood, which in turn led to the increasingly corporate driven culture of movies that has all but taken over the entire industry today. The director, who shot to the top of the Hollywood A-list after his Vietnam drama The Deer Hunter proved a massive critical and sizeable commercial hit in 1977-garnering nine Oscar nominations and winning six (including Best Picture and Best Director)-suffered an Icarus-like fall from grace following the disastrous production and release of his epic western Heaven’s Gate (1980). The late Michael Cimino is best remembered today as a cautionary tale. |
